INTERACTIVE METHOD OF TEACHING A BIBLE STORY
How to make your teaching challenging and interesting? Usually children are tired of schooling, lessons and studies.
CSI suggests to use the INTERACTIVE METHOD in teaching the Bible stories to children which will make teaching attractive and fun.
WHAT DOES THAT mean?
INTERACTIVE TEACHING means involving students in the teaching, making them active participants of teaching, not having them as passive listeners. HOW to DO IT?
Sample Lesson Plan
Introduction. The teacher asks if kids want to color a picture.
Guessing the contents of the story. They look at the picture and try to guess what is the story about.
Asking questions on the picture. The teacher can ask some questions on the picture. Of course, the children will not guess all the details of the story. But the questions can provoke their interest.
Reading the story. After answering the questions it is time to challenge them to read the story for seeing what the story is really about. Each child is asked to read a small part (2-3 sentences). Children like to show off how they can read.
Answering the question after the story (see section “Let’s talk about it”). One child reads a question, and all the rest are challenged to answers it. The teacher asks more than one child to answer, even if the answer is correct. In such a way, the teacher can involve as many children as possible. The teacher challenges the students to find the answer in the Bible verse or in the story, instead of telling their own version.
Discussion using the topics from “Let’s talk about the story”. They read the topics for discussion and discuss them. The teacher asks everybody his/her opinion. This is very important to hear every child for everybody to feel appreciated.
Retelling the Bible story. The children are asked to retell the story.
Coloring the picture. This is a very important time for a teacher. It is the time when the teacher can have a personal time with each child by approaching everyone, showing interest in their work, praising them and may be helping them to combine the colors. Some smaller children might not know how to do it. Yet. you will see how happy they are when you personally approach them and talk to them about their picture! Of course the teacher should be positive and encourage the kids all the time, showing love to them which is an essential element in teaching children. Only love will draw children to Bible studies and to you!
Follow up. We can encourage children to tell the story to their parents and show the picture, which will bring the Bible truth and the story into their home. Many children will like the idea of hanging their work at home on the wall. It could help their parents find out the Bible truth. It is a good chance to help parents gain interest towards the Bible study and church.
